West Chester PA

West Chester is the county seat of Chester County. The city began in the 18th Century and was knows as Turk’s Head, for a local tavern. There’s still a Turk’s Head Inn today. It’s name changed to West Chester in 1789. West Chester Academy was one of man private schools in the borough and today it’s known as West Chester State University.  You’ll find wonderful old brick homes in the borough and will probably also notice the green stone used in some churches and buildings. It’s serpentine stone, a local stone. The atmosphere in downtown West Chester is charming. In the summer, you can have lunch at a sidewalk restaurant, in the evening you can stroll the streets while eating an ice cream cone or a gelato while shops stay open late one night a week. The presence of the county courthouse means that there are many law offices in town. The University brings cultural and sporting events open to the public. There’s even a West Chester Growers Market on Saturdays from May through December. All sorts of antique shops can be found within walking distance of each other.
